mandira bedi, saroj khan, ddlj, sunny deol

In a candid conversation with Kareena Kapoor on the talk show What Women Want, actress Mandira Bedi opened up about her struggles while filming the iconic song Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna from the Bollywood classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). The film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, marked Mandira’s big-screen debut, but she described the experience as ‘terrifying’.

Mandira Bedi recalls being compared to Sunny Deol by Saroj Khan

Mandira shared that her fear of choreographed dance began during the shoot, particularly under the guidance of the legendary choreographer Saroj Khan. “Saroj ji told me, ‘You know something, you are like somebody I know very well. You are like Sunny Deol. He shakes his shoulders. You shake your shoulders really well, but as a woman and as a female actress, you need to learn how to shake your hips,’ which I could not do,” Mandira recalled. The comparison to Sunny Deol only added to the pressure, making the task even more daunting for Mandira.

Reflecting on her nerves during the shoot, Mandira admitted, “If I have nightmares as a grown woman, it’s about two things — choreographed dance and maths exams. They both give me cold sweat.” Dancing alongside seasoned performers like Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol only intensified her anxiety. She explained, “It was actually quite terrifying. Freestyle dancing is fun, but when you have to follow moves to the count of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8… it is horrifying, at least for me.”

Mandira’s admission sheds light on the challenges she faced during her debut film, where her discomfort with choreographed dance stood in stark contrast to the smooth performances of her more experienced co-stars. Despite the daunting experience, the song went on to become a memorable part of the film, marking a significant moment in Mandira’s career.
